The minute I met Karla + Harold, I just felt it in my stomach that we were meant to work together. Every other comment was "OMG, ME TOO!" It was almost like we had known each other for years + catching up even though we were meeting to discuss my photographic services. We chatted about so many little things - from how they met, what they like to do when they relax + finally, when Harold proposed. We exchanged love stories about Disneyland + what we both enjoy doing + eating there. About 1/2 way into the meeting, Karla asked, "Soooo, how do you feel about destination engagement sessions?" UMMMM YES PLEASE! She spoke of their love of Hawaii + I flat out said "I'M YOUR GIRL!" Was that too forward? Thankfully, they felt the same + 2 months later, we were on a plane to Hawaii!
We had been watching the weather for a couple weeks - as usual with Hawaii weather, it changed from rainy to sunny back to rainy then cloudy etc. The day we arrived, it was a beautiful sunny day - your typical regular day in Hawaii...however, then next day, the islands had something else in store for our engagement session!
RAIN. I'm not talking about the usual 5 minute light passing shower...I'm talking about straight up consistent rain. While clouds might make for good photos, when you fly 5K miles for some gorgeous sun, you want that sun! But though it all, Karla + Harold remained in high spirits...we talked + laughed during our car ride + took in the sights! I attempted to tell them an old Hawaiian folk story + failed miserably...(I still don't really know it)...
They braved the rain like the champs they are - they weren't afraid to get wet + they embraced what the island threw their way! I mean, just look at their gorgeousness just slapping the rain in the face with their joy + laughter....
The nicest folks at Na La'ahia generously provided a beautiful haku lei that Karla could wear! I have to say it complimented her outfit perfectly + she was so in love with the color. I think Harold felt the same + looked at his bride-to-be with complete adoration!
So then it came time to location #2. We fell in love with the backdrop when we were brainstorming ideas + we vowed we were going to make it happen.
PRO: gorgeous sweeping views of the mountains
CON: 15-minute walk....IN...THE...RAIN!
We felt it was worth it....what do you think?
YOU GUYSSSSSS....HAAAALLLPPPS! No can handle!! They're the cutest together + it was such a beautiful day despite the rain! Plus, Harold takes such wonderful care of Karla - he walked with her + made sure she was sure footed in the sand as they walked, he held the hem of her dress + he gave her his shirt towards the end so she had some cover. Harold, you are going to be the BEST husband...Karla...girl...way to swoop this guy up!
Downside...we had to scrap locations 3+4 due to the rain...but we ended the day with a delicious dinner + some yummy malasadas from Leonards!!
Now, I leave you with some iPhone gems/outtakes that really showcase the craziness of the day...the two videos are essentially the same...but the pic...I'm sorry. I had to. Please always ALWAYS wear bug spray.....
